How to find the audio settings on Microsoft Windows XP
Click on the Start button from the Windows task bar, click on Settings and select the Control Panel.
Click on the Start » Settings » Control Panel.

The Control Panel Window will appear.
Locate the Sounds and Audio Devices icon and double click to open it.

How to change microphone settings
1. From the Sounds and Audio Devices window, click on Sound Recording in the middle section of the window. Under Sound Recording select the correct microphone device from the dropdown list then click on the Volume button.

2. The Recording Control panel will appear. From the menu bar on top, click on Options and then select Properties.

The Properties panel will appear.
Make sure the Recording is selected.
Inside the Show the following volume controls window, make sure all the boxes are checked. All the items should have a check mark.
Click OK to save the changes made.

3. In the Recording Control panel, under Microphone make sure there is a check mark next to Select box. If not, click in the box to check it.
From the menu bar on top, click on Options and then select Advanced Controls.

Click the Advanced button under the Microphone volume.
The Advanced Controls for Microphone panel will appear.

Under Other Controls, make sure Microphone Boost is unchecked. If this is checked, click in the box to uncheck it.
Click the Close button to save the changes.

From the menu bar in the Recording Control window, click on Options and select Exit to finish Now make a test in Musicommand to check your microphone.
4. If you are still having problems with the microphone, let’s test the microphone with Microsoft Sound Recorder.
From the Windows task bar, click on Start » All Programs » Accessories » Sound Recorder.
The Sound Recorder panel will appear.
Try to record your speech though your microphone. If you can't hear what you have recorded, go to the Sound section of the Control Panel and adjust the microphone settings until the recording test is working for you.
