How to find the audio settings on Microsoft Windows Vista

Click on the Start button from the Windows task bar and select the Control Panel.

Select Hardware and Sound from the Control Panel window and click on it.

Then double click on the Sound icon to open the sound setting.

Note: If your Control Panel is in Classic view, double click the Sound icon directly:

How to change microphone options

When the Sound window is opened and with Playback tab selected, clicking on the Recording tab located on top of the screen.

1. After selecting the Recording tab, your microphone device should appear. It should have a tick beside it. If it doesn't, set it as your default by clicking the Set Default button.

2. You will notice a volume meter bar on the right side of the device. When you make sound, the meter will show the level of sound in real-time in green as the microphone listens to the sound. This indicates the microphone is working correctly on your PC.

3. If the sound meter bar does not display sound input in green, click on the Properties button below to change the setting. This opens the Microphone properties window. Click on the Device usage dropdown box and select "Use this device (enable)" to enable this microphone device.

4. For best microphone quality, change the microphone setting by clicking on the Levels tab on the Microphone properties window.

  • Adjust the Microphone volume to minimum of 50.
  • Adjust Microphone Boost to 0.0 dB.

5. Click Apply and OK to close.
Now make a test in Musicommand to check your microphone.

6. If you are still having problems with the microphone, let's test the microphone with Microsoft Sound Recordre.

From the Windows task bar, click on Start » All Programs » Accessories » Sound Recorder.

The Sound Recorder panel will appear.
Try to record your speech though your microphone. If you can't hear what you have recorded, go to the Sound section of the Control Panel and adjust the microphone settings until the recording test is working for you.
